Boxer Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan wins gold in women’s featherweight

Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan has won Olympic gold in the women’s featherweight boxing division.

Lin defeated Julia Szeremeta of Poland by unanimous decision in the gold medal bout on Saturday. It is Taiwan’s first-ever boxing medal at the Olympics.

Lin and Algeria’s Imane Khelif were subject to online vitriol over misconceptions about their gender throughout the Olympics.

The Russian-dominated International Boxing Association disqualified Lin and Khelif from last year’s world championships, claiming both failed an eligibility test for women’s competition without providing any evidence. The International Olympic Committee has banned the IBA from the Olympics and defended the two women from what IOC president Thomas Bach has called “hate speech.”

“We have two boxers who are born as women, who have been raised as women, who have a passport as a woman and have competed for many years as women,” Bach said.

Khelif won the gold medal in the women’s welterweight division on Friday.
