Canada makes first cuts to men’s Olympic basketball roster

With one week until Olympic training camp concludes, it appears Canada’s men’s basketball roster is starting to take shape.

The program announced Wednesday it has released Oshae Brissett and Kyle Alexander from the senior men’s national team camp.

Brissett, fresh off a title win with the NBA’s Boston Celtics, requested to withdraw from camp in order to focus on free agency, Canada Basketball said in a statement.

Leonard Miller, who was at camp ahead of this summer’s Olympics in Paris, was also released. Miller was there for the experience and was not competing for a roster spot.

The trio of cuts comes less than a week after Andrew Wiggins had withdrawn from camp at the behest of the Golden State Warriors — followed by Zach Edey, who withdrew on Sunday in order to focus on his rookie NBA season after being drafted ninth overall by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Canada’s senior men’s camp roster now stands at 16 players competing to represent the red-and-white this summer.

Once camp concludes in Toronto, the squad will head to Las Vegas and face the U.S. in an exhibition game at T-Mobile Arena on July 10. It’ll be the first matchup between the two countries since Canada secured a 127-118 win over their southern neighbours to capture a bronze medal at the FIBA World Cup last August.
