Canada’s Penny Oleksiak fails to qualify for individual event at Paris Olympics

Canadian Penny Oleksiak won’t be in the pool for any individual swimming events at the upcoming Paris Olympics.

The seven-time Olympic medallist missed out on qualifying for the 100-metre freestyle after finishing with a time of 53.77 which was 0.16 seconds short of the 53.61 seconds needed to qualify.

Fortunately for the 24-year-old, she will still be heading to Paris to compete on Canada’s relay teams.

Oleksiak burst onto the swimming scene at the Rio Olympics back in 2016 when she became the first Canadian athlete to win four medals at a single Summer Games. She also became the youngest Olympics gold medallist and set an Olympic record in tying for gold in the women’s 100-metre freestyle.

In the following Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Oleksiak would take home three more medals, making her Canada’s most decorated athlete ever at the Olympics.

Canada will be well represented in Paris with Olympic champion Maggie Mac Neil, Summer McIntosh and more filling out an impressive roster of swimmers.
