CALGARY – Canada’s Rosalind Groenewoud, a longtime standout in the halfpipe discipline of freestyle skiing, is retiring from the sport.

The world champion in 2011, Groenewoud also earned seven X Games medals and nine World Cup/Grand Prix medals.

The 28-year-old Calgary native was hampered by injuries the past four seasons, but did manage to qualify for the 2014 and 2018 Olympics, where Groenewoud finished in the top 10.

Groenewoud helped in the push to include halfpipe in the Olympics for the first time in 2014 following the death of fellow Canadian star Sarah Burke.

"I think everyone has a threshold as to how much heartache and disappointment they can bear in the pursuit of their dream. I reached that limit this year," Groenewoud said in a statement. "Although I had always planned to compete in the 2019 world championships, I ran out of the fire that allows me to push through injuries and pain. I’ll really miss flying high and spinning out of the pipe — nothing else can match that feeling."
