Canadian Kylie Masse dominates at Italian International

Olympic-team member Kylie Masse completed a golden sweep of the women’s backstroke events on Sunday with a victory in the 200-metre race at the Italian International swimming competition.

The 20-year-old Masse, from Windsor, Ont., clocked a personal best two minutes 8.79 seconds. She also won the 50 backstroke — in Canadian record time on Friday — and the 100 backstroke on Saturday.

Italy’s Margherita Panziera was second in 2:10.21 and Giulia Ramatelli, also of Italy, was third in 2:12.63.

Three Canadians were in the women’s 50 butterfly final, but only one came away with harwdware.

Sweden’s Therese Alshammar took the gold in 25.84, Toronto’s Penny Oleksiak was second in 26.08 and Italy’s Silvia Di Pietro was third in 26.32. Montreal’s Sandrine Mainville was fourth in 26.86 and Michelle Williams of North York, Ont., fifth in 26.89.

Elsewhere, Rio-bound Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., completed her preparations for the Olympics with her fourth and fifth gold medals at the Quebec Cup.

Savard posted victories in the 100 butterfly in 58.68 and the 50 freestyle in 25.56. She also won the 100 freestyle, 200 butterfly and 50 butterfly.
