RIO DE JANIERO, Brazil — Canadian boxers Simon Kean and Custio Clayton have secured spots for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Kean, who hails from Trois-Rivieres, Que., qualified on Saturday when he earned a bronze in the 91 kg division at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament of the American Confederation.
The six-foot-five, 215-pound Kean lost to Ecuador’s Ytalo Antonio Perea Castillo in the semifinal on Friday and had to wait until Castillo beat American Angelo Dominic Breazeale in the final Saturday to learn his fate. The three best boxers in the category obtained their Olympic passes.
Halifax’s Clayton secured the fifth and final a berth in the 69 kg class when his opponent from the quarter-finals, Mike Ribeiro of Brazil, won the gold.
Heavyweight Samir El-Mais of Windsor, Ont., missed qualifying in the 91 kg weight class. He lost in Friday’s semis, and his opponent lost in the final.
Canada qualified just one boxer for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.
