Olympic Games Paris 2024: Day 5 events to watch, schedule

For those with 9-5 jobs in the Eastern time zone, you might want to consider signing off a bit early on Wednesday.

The Day 5 schedule is filled with big-ticket events in the afternoon.

The highlight from a Canadian perspective is the huge women’s soccer game against Colombia.

Here are a look at some events to watch, along with the full schedule for Day 5.

(All times Eastern)

Summer McIntosh (swimming, women’s 200-m butterfly heats, 5:46 a.m.; semis, 2:45 p.m.)

The Canadian swim sensation begins her quest for a third medal at these Games. McIntosh won this event at the world championships the past two years.

Tammara Thibeault (boxing, women’s 75 kg, round of 16, 11:06 a.m.)

The Canadian favourite opens the Olympics with a bout against Cindy Ngamba of the IOC Refugee Team. Thibeault was world champion in 2022.

Canadian 3×3 women’s basketball team (vs. China, noon)

After opening with a win over Australia, Canada faces a tougher test against top-ranked China. Canada came into the tournament ranked fifth in the eight-team field

Ilya Kharun (swimming, men’s 200-m butterfly final, 2:37 p.m.)

Kharun posted the third-fastest time in the semifinals on Tuesday, making him a threat to become the first Canadian male swimmer to hit the Olympic podium since 2012.

Canadian women’s soccer team (vs. Colombia, 3 p.m.)

Will the drama ever end for this team? Against all odds, Canada can advance to the quarterfinals with a win. FIFA no longer controls this team’s destiny in the midst of a drone spying scandal.

U.S. vs. South Sudan men’s basketball (3 p.m.)

The Americans eked out a one-point win over upstart South Sudan in pre-Olympic play. Each team is 1-0 in Paris. Ottawa native Marial Shayok is one of South Sudan’s key players.

Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson (beach volleyball, vs. Switzerland, 3 p.m.)

The Canadians battle Switzerland’s Esmee Bobner and Zoe Verge-Depre in a team between the only two unbeaten teams in Pool D.

Katie Ledecky (swimming, women’s 1,500-m final, 3:13 p.m.)

The American hasn’t lost a race at this distance in 14 years. One more medal gives her 12, which would put her into a tie for most decorated female swimmer in Olympic history.
