Scottie Scheffler's 2025 season is off to an inauspicious start.
The three-time reigning PGA Tour player of the year withdrew from The Sentry, the season-opening event which begins Jan. 2, after undergoing surgery for a cut on his hand suffered on Christmas.
"On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass. Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery. He has been told that he should be back to 100 per cent in three to four weeks," Scheffler's manager Blake Smith said in a statement released Friday by the PGA Tour.
The Christmas injury is perhaps a fitting end to a topsy-turvy year for Scheffler which saw him win his second Masters and eight other tournaments, including the Olympics.
At the PGA Championship in May, he was arrested on his way to the course for his second round for a traffic violation and spent a brief period behind bars before being released in time to tee off. All charges were later dropped.
Now, the 28-year-old Texan is on the shelf with a non-golf-related injury.
Smith said Scheffler aims to return for The American Express tournament, which begins Jan. 16 in La Quinta, Calif.
