Sahith Theegala’s morning quickly went from bad to worse during his second round at the RBC Canadian Open on Friday, playing the final five holes of his round without a driver in his bag.
Theegala, who started his second round on the 10th hole, approached his second shot on par-5 fourth with just the shaft of his driver intact after powdering his initial shot 311 yards and into the left rough guarding the fairway.
The California native was seen tightening the head of his driver only a few holes back before suffering his damage on the fourth.
The absence of his driver failed to deal any further damage on Theegala’s scorecard, however, as he played the final five holes of his round at even par. He wrapped up with a one-over 71 to put him at five-over par and in major jeopardy of missing the cutline.
Even without the longest club in his bag, Theegala entered the clubhouse gaining 0.868 strokes off the tee to put him 12th in the field and ahead of leader Robert MacIntyre in that category.
Theegala kicked off his third trip to the RBC Canadian Open with an opening-round 74 to leave him 12 strokes off the pace heading into Friday. Theegala was unable to gain any ground in his second round, outnumbering his three birdies on the day with four bogeys to leave him well out of contention.
With the current cutline projected at even par, Theegala will likely miss the cut for the third time this season just two weeks after finishing the PGA Championship in a tie for 12th and contending for much of the weekend.
