Wyndham Clark withdraws from Players Championship due to neck injury

A major champion is out of contention at The Players Championship.

Wyndham Clark withdrew from the annual tournament at TPC Sawgrass on Friday with a neck injury, the PGA Tour announced.

Clark shot even par in Thursday's first round but was 4-over through nine holes and well off the cut line during the second round when he shook hands with playing partners Jordan Spieth and Danny Walker.

Clark, who won the 2023 U.S. Open in Los Angeles, is currently the eighth-ranked player in the world and sits 66th on the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup leaderboard.

Earlier Friday, the 31-year-old was announced as part of The Bay FC's starting lineup for its playoff match Tuesday on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
