Two more Canadians will have a chance to win the U.S. Open.
Adam Svensson and amateur Ashton McCulloch qualified for the third major of the year at one of the nine qualifying events across North America.
The two Canucks qualified at the Canadian qualifying site at Cherry Hill Club in Ridgeway, Ont. on Monday.
Svensson and McCulloch were two of 66 golfers competing for seven spots at the U.S. Open in the gruelling qualifying event that sees the golfers play two rounds in one day. It is well known as “the longest day in golf”
Svensson finished solo second at the event after firing back-to-back 65s to finish 12-under overall. The 30-year-old from Surrey, B.C., turned pro in 2015 and has one career PGA Tour win at the 2022 RSM Classic.
McCulloch did just enough Monday to finish in solo seventh and grab the last spot available. He opened with a 65 in Round 1 then shot 68 in Round 2 to finish 8-under overall and one shot ahead of two golfers at 7-under.
The 21-year-old from Kingston, Ont., has yet to turn pro and is a member of the Michigan State Spartans golf team. McCulloch played in last weekend’s Canadian Open after he won the 2023 Canadian Amateur and earned an automatic entry. He shot 71-74 in the opening two rounds and missed the cut.
With Svensson and McCulloch qualified for U.S. Open, there will now be seven Canadians at the tournament as Nick Taylor, Taylor Pendrith, Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Hadwin were already in the field.
The U.S. Open will take place June 13-16 at Pinehurst Golf and Country Club in North Carolina. American Wyndham Clark is the defending champion.
