First pairs set for Presidents Cup in Montreal

ÎLE BIZARD, Que. — The first round of the Presidents Cup is finally here.

Mike Weir, the captain of the International Team, is ready to try to take his team to the winners’ circle at the biennial event after nine straight losses.

Unlike the Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup captains get to pick who is matched up against who. Weir had the first pick and he did not go with a Canadian to try to get the crowd going early — saying that if he was to pick a Canadian to go first, it would merely be for the sake of picking a Canadian.

“It kind of crossed our minds at some point, but the matchups are the matchups. Once we had our discussions internally, we had a plan, and that’s how we thought,” Weir said. “We didn’t really just want to put out a Canadian just to do that.”

Mackenzie Hughes and Si Woo Kim will sit out Thursday for the International side while Max Homa and Brian Harman will sit for the Americans.

Here are the rest of the matches for the opening day of the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal, with the American teams listed first.
