Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope will undergo surgery after dislocating his shoulder against Manchester United on Saturday. The operation will sideline the 31-year-old for approximately four months.
Pope was withdrawn after 86 minutes at St. James' Park after saving a shot from Sergio Reguilon. He landed awkwardly on his shoulder and immediately signalled for medical attention.
Unfortunately for Pope, the setback will put his chances of making England's EURO 2024 squad in jeopardy. It also adds to the growing list of injuries Eddie Howe's side is currently facing.
As a result of Pope's unavailability, the Magpies are considering former United keeper and free agent David de Gea on a free transfer.
Since leaving United at the end of last season following the expiry of his contract, the Spainard has been without a club.
De Gea spent 12 years at Old Trafford, making 415 appearances in the Premier League. He was part of the title-winning team in 2012/13 and won the club's player of the year award four times.
The 33-year-old is rumoured to be open to the move, but nothing has been confirmed.
