Reigning Walter Cup champions, PWHL Minnesota have signed Toronto native Claire Thompson to a two-year contract, the team announced on Friday.
The 26-year-old blueliner was selected third overall in the 2024 PWHL draft and will play for the first time since the 2022-2023 season when she suited up for Team Sonnet of the PWHPA. Thompson spent the 2023-24 year pursuing her medical degree.
“I am thrilled to join the PWHL this upcoming season,” said Thompson. “It is an honour to sign with PWHL Minnesota, and I can’t wait to get started to continue to build upon their most impressive first season.”
Thompson helped Team Canada win gold at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, where she broke the record for most points by a defender in a single Olympic tournament with 13 points in seven games.
Prior to her time in the PWHPA and international play, Thompson played for Princeton University, where she donned the captaincy in her senior year. There, she totalled 31 goals and 56 assists for 87 points through 129 collegiate games.
