The Toronto Sceptres' overtime loss to the Montreal Victoire last Saturday cost them more than a couple of points.
Defender Rylind MacKinnon has been suspended one game by the PWHL, following a review by its player safety committee, the league announced on Thursday.
The incident took place at 5:18 of the third period as both MacKinnon and Victoire defender Amanda Boulier went after a loose puck toward the boards. The Sceptres defender made a hit on Boulier and was immediately whistled for a penalty. Upon review, MacKinnon was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for an illegal check to the head.
Boulier left the contest following the hit and did not return in what ended up as a 4-3 overtime win for Montreal.
According to the PWHL's statement, its player safety committee determined "the head was the main point of contact and that MacKinnon continued her momentum after playing the puck."
The Sceptres return to action on Friday, hosting the Boston Fleet in Toronto. The Victoire visit the Frost in Minnesota on Saturday.
