With only three games left in the regular season, the New York Sirens have brought back Kayla Vespa.
The Sirens signed Vespa to a 10-day player agreement on Friday, citing that she will help the team manage day-to-day injuries during the final stretch of the season.
Vespa, who started the season on New York's reserve list, has already been activated twice for 10-day stints. She has appeared in eight games for the Sirens this season. During the inaugural season of the PWHL, the 28-year-old from Hamilton, Ont., also played for the Sirens. She suited up for 23 games with the team, totalling two goals and an assist in that time.
“To us, Kayla has always been a full-time member of the family, and she embodies exactly who we are and who we strive to be,” general manager Pascal Daoust said.
The Sirens play their first game back from the international break on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET against the Boston Fleet. They are on the brink of playoff elimination, and could be eliminated on Saturday if the Fleet beat the Sceptres in regulation and if the Ottawa Charge beat the Montreal Victoire in regulation.
Even if they survive idle elimination on Saturday, the Sirens' chances of staying within playoff contention on Sunday are slim. In all the potential outcomes they must earn a point against the Fleet in some way to continue playing for the playoffs.
