The Professional Women’s Hockey League has yet to reveal the names and logos of the six teams set to take the ice in January, but Thursday brought an interesting development in the search for clues as the PWHL takes shape.
A search of the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s online database reveals that PWHL Holdings, LLC filed the following six trademark applications on Wednesday: Toronto Torch, Montreal Echo, Ottawa Alert, Minnesota Superior, Boston Wicked and New York Sound.
The presence of these applications was first reported by DetroitHockey.net and has been confirmed by Sportsnet. The filings are listed as live in the database and categorized as “Goods and Services: Entertainment in the nature of hockey games; Organization of hockey games.”
This report comes just two days after the league unveiled its official logo, and about three weeks before all six teams are set to open training camps on Nov. 15. The PWHL has kept quiet about team names, logos, sweater designs and arenas.
These trademark applications, while interesting, do not necessarily mean the six names filed will be made official by the league. It’s possible more will come as the process plays out. In the NHL, both the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken filed trademark applications for multiple names before settling on their final monikers.
Before it was bought out by PWHPA investors, the Premier Hockey Federation — previously known as the NWHL — had seven teams: Toronto Six, Montreal Force, Boston Pride, Minnesota WhiteCaps, Connecticut Whale, Metroplitan Riveters and Buffalo Beauts.
