Arguably the greatest women's soccer player of all time is hanging up her cleats.
After teasing the decision late Thursday night — with a video of cleats literally hanging from a goal post — Canadian superstar Christine Sinclair announced her plans to retire from international football at the end of the year on Friday.
And while the decision from the 40-year-old striker doesn't come as a complete shock, it still was a huge piece of news as she is easily the greatest Canuck to have ever played the game.
She is also one of the greatest athletes that Canada has ever produced.
To name just a few of her incredible accomplishments, Sinclair is the world's all-time leading goal-scorer with 190 in 327 international appearances. She's won Canada Soccer's female player of the year 14 times. In December 2019, she was named the Canada Soccer player of the decade. She led Canada to bronze, bronze and gold medals at the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games.
The list goes on and on.
So it's only understandable that the reaction to her retirement on Friday was filled with both admiration and sadness. A day celebrating what she accomplished, while also realizing an incredible run is officially coming to an end.
Because if one thing is for certain, Canadians will never see a player like Christine Sinclair ever again.
Here's a look at some of the best reactions to Sinclair's retirement:
