LONDON (AP) — Eddie Nketiah scored his first Premier League hat trick as Arsenal brushed aside last-place Sheffield United 5-0 on Saturday to keep pace in the title race.
The England striker made sure Arsenal didn’t miss the injured Gabriel Jesus as he opened the scoring in the 28th minute from close range and completed his hat trick in the 58th with a fierce shot from outside the area to put Arsenal 3-0 up.
Substitute Fabio Vieira netted the fourth from the penalty spot in the 88th and Takehiro Tomiyasu completed the rout deep into stoppage time from a corner.
Jesus had been the architect of Arsenal's win at Sevilla in the Champions League in midweek with a goal and an assist, but also sustained a hamstring injury that is expected to sideline the Brazilian for a few weeks.
That gave Nketiah another chance to impress and he made full use of it against a team that has now conceded a league-high 29 goals in 10 games.
In a tepid first half that saw Arsenal continually pass the ball around but struggling to break down a compact defense, Nketiah broke the deadlock when Declan Rice picked him out in the area and the striker used one touch to go past a defender and the second to slot the ball past goalkeeper Wes Foderingham.
The second came five minutes after the halftime break, when Foderingham flailed at a corner and the ball landed at the feet of Nketiah, who hammered it into the far corner.
The 24-year-old Arsenal academy product saved the best for last, collecting a pass from Emile Smith Rowe and setting himself up for a shot from 25 yards that he smashed into the top corner.
The striker, who received his first England call-up earlier this season, celebrated by kissing the yellow game ball and lifting it to the sky with one hand as the Emirates crowd chanted his name.
Arsenal was awarded a penalty after a lengthy VAR review for a foul on Vieira as he broke into the area, and the Portuguese midfielder stepped up to the spot himself to slot in the fourth. Tomiyasu was then on hand to slot home the fifth after a corner in the sixth minute of added time.
The win keeps Arsenal two points behind leader Tottenham. Defending champion Manchester City can draw level with the Gunners on 24 points by beating crosstown rival Manchester United in Sunday's derby.
Sheffield United is the only team yet without a win in the Premier League and is in last place with one point.
Ben White nearly netted a fourth for Arsenal in the 62nd when he drew a good save from Foderingham, who had also pulled off a good stop to deny Gabriel Martinelli in the first half.
Brentford 2, Chelsea 0
In London, Brentford won at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League for the third straight season as second-half goals by Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo earned a 2-0 victory over Chelsea.
Pinnock headed in a cross from Bryan Mbeumo in the 58th minute for a goal that was against the general run of a play, before Mbeumo added the second in fifth minute of stoppage time, tapping into an empty net at the end of a fast break with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez having gone up for a corner.
The first half had been one-sided, with Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer setting up great chances for Noni Madueke, Marc Cucurella and Raheem Sterling. All of them were squandered, with Madueke's shot hitting the crossbar.
Brentford was a constant threat on the counterattack and both goals came from that route.
Chelsea also lost to its London rival last season (2-0) and the season before (4-1), which was the first year Brentford played in the Premier League.
As frustrations boiled over late on, Jesus Perez — the assistant to Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino — was shown a red card in the technical area.
Chelsea has only won one of its six league games at home this season, and that was against promoted Luton, with Pochettino’s team struggling to break down opponents that set up defensively.
It was a second straight victory for Brentford after an eight-game winless run in all competitions.
Bournemouth 2, Burnley 1
In Bournemouth, Philip Billing scored a wonder goal from around 40 yards on Saturday to earn the home side a 2-1 win over Burnley and its first Premier League victory of the season.
The Denmark midfielder collected the ball just inside Burnley’s half, took a couple of touches then — from a central position — lobbed back-pedaling goalkeeper James Trafford for a goal celebrated wildly inside the Vitality Stadium.
Few will have enjoyed it more than Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, whose job was coming under pressure after arriving in the offseason and failing to win any of his first nine league games in charge.
It looked like Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez might have denied Iraola the much-needed result when he shot into the corner in the 88th minute. After a VAR check that lasted more than five minutes — and drew cries of “this is embarrassing” by fans — the goal was scrubbed off.
Charlie Taylor smashed home a bouncing ball home from the edge of the area to put Burnley 1-0 ahead but the left back was dispossessed in the lead-up to Bournemouth’s equalizer.
Antoine Semenyo pinched the ball off Taylor in the middle of Burnley’s half, advanced to the edge of the area and slotted a low finish into the far corner.
Bournemouth climbed out of the bottom three and Burnley dropped to next-to-last place.
