Alphonso Davies is running again, which is good news for Canada's National Men's soccer team.
German football club Bayern Munich put out a simple tweet, announcing that the 22-year-old had "completed his first running session" on Monday. It marked the first training Davies had completed since injuring his hamstring in a game for Bayern against Mainz on April 23.
"The 22-year-old Canada international is now stepping up his recovery," the club said in a linked announcement.
The original time-frame for his injury was speculated to be six weeks, which would put Davies' return roughly around the middle of June.
The 47th-ranked Canadian men face No. 58 Panama on June 14 in Las Vegas in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinal, with the winner facing either the 13th-ranked U.S. or No. 15 Mexico for the title, in Las Vegas. The Canadians then start play in the Gold Cup with a game June 27 at Toronto's BMO Field against a qualifier before facing Guadeloupe and Cuba in Houston.
Davies has won 39 caps for Canada with 13 goals and 16 assists and was instrumental in helping the team qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 36 years in 2022. He scored the squad's first-ever goal at soccer's showcase event in Qatar. Last week the Edmonton native was named CONCACAF Men's Player of the Year and also to the Bundesliga team of the season for his club.
Bayern has only two games remaining on its schedule — May 20 against RB Leipzig and May 27 against FC Köln — and is one point up on Borussia Dortmund in the chase for the Bundesliga title.
