PORTO, Portugal -- Canadian international Stephen Eustaquio scored as Porto defeated Atletico Madrid 2-1 in Champions League play Tuesday to finish atop Group B.
Brazilian winger Galeno beat Atletico defender Stefan Savic to the ball down the left flank, headed toward the penalty box and sent in a low cross than an onrushing Eustaquio hammered into the corner of the net before being chopped down in a tackle.
The 24th-minute strike was the second career Champions League goal for the 25-year-old Eustaquio, expected to be one of the main cogs in the Canadian midfield at the World Cup in Qatar.
Eustaquio has three goals and three assists in 26 appearances for Canada.
Porto lost its first two Champions League matches this season and wasn't expected to advance from a group in which Atletico Madrid was the heavy favourite.
But on Tuesday, it was Atletico lamenting a last-place finish and Porto celebrating the group win.
Eustaquio is one of four Canadians heading to the knockout stage of Champions League.
Tottenham 2, Marseille 1
MARSEILLE, France (AP) — Tottenham qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League after recovering from a woeful first-half performance to beat Marseille 2-1 and win its group on Tuesday.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored with the last kick of the game at Stade Velodrome for a goal that lifted Tottenham to the top of Group D above Eintracht Frankfurt, which had already clinched a 2-1 win at Sporting and was in first place until Hojbjerg's goal.
That goal also meant Marseille finished in last place and will have no involvement in European competition in the new year.
The French team had to win to advance to the knockout stage for the first time since the 2011-12 season and dominated the first half, penning the visitors in their own half and finally taking the lead in stoppage time when Chancel Mbemba headed in after a quickly taken corner.
Tottenham didn't have a touch in the opposition penalty box in the first half, during which Son Heung-min was forced off the field — looking dazed — after receiving a shoulder to his face by Mbemba. The forward, who is set to play at the World Cup for South Korea, appeared to be unsteady on his feet as he was helped off by a member of Spurs' medical staff.
Tottenham finally gained a foothold early in the second half and Clement Lenglet headed home a 54th-minute equalizer — with the team's latest goal from a set piece — by glancing in Ivan Perisic's left-wing free kick.
In a nervy final 15 minutes, Hojbjerg struck the crossbar for Tottenham before, at the other end, Alexis Sanchez's goalbound shot was deflected wide off the body of Perisic.
Eintracht Frankfurt 2, Sporting Lisbon 1
LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- Eintracht Frankfurt came from behind to defeat and advance to the knockout stage in its Champions League debut on Tuesday
Kolo Muani scored a 72nd-minute winner for the visitors. Arthur Gomes had put the hosts ahead in the 39th and Frankfurt equalized with a penalty kick converted by Daichi Kamada in the 62nd.
Sporting was leading Group D while it was winning at home, but it ended in third place and with a spot in the Europa League playoffs. A draw would have been enough for it to advance regardless of other results.
The Portuguese side was trying to make it to the round of 16 of the Champions League for the second straight season. It was eliminated by Manchester City in the last 16 last season.
Sporting started the game one point behind Tottenham, which scored late to win 2-1 at Marseille and finish first in what had been a wide-open Group D entering the last round. Marseille ended in last place.
Frankfurt was making its Champions League debut this season thanks to its Europa League title last season.
Sporting was trying to become the third Portuguese club to advance to the last 16 this season, after Benfica and Porto had already secured their spots in the next round.
Sporting lost forward Nuno Santos because of an injury in the first half. Santos was in a preliminary 55-man squad for Portugal ahead of the Qatar World Cup.
Sporting's 17-year-old midfielder Dario Essugo made his Champions League debut in the second half.
Bayern Munich 2, Inter Milan 0
MUNICH (AP) -- Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting extended his rich scoring form for Bayern Munich as the German champion beat Inter Milan on Tuesday to complete the Champions League group stage with a perfect record of six wins.
Both teams had already secured a spot in the last 16, with Inter finishing second in Group C behind Bayern.
Choupo-Moting hit a rising shot into the top-left corner from outside the penalty area for Bayern's second goal, taking the Cameroon striker to seven goals in his last six games in all competitions. Choupo-Moting also had an overhead kick goal disallowed for offside shortly before.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann's decision to use the longtime backup as a starting striker has helped bring about a seven-game winning run for Bayern since mid-October and has given the team a focus in attack following Robert Lewandowski's departure to Barcelona at the end of last season.
Inter was aggrieved at referee Ivan Kruzliak's decision not to give a penalty early on when Sadio Mane blocked a shot with his hands in front of his face. After consulting a video replay, Kruzliak indicated that he decided against a penalty because Mane was acting instinctively to protect himself.
Benjamin Pavard opened the scoring for Bayern with a header when he was left in space in front of goal at a corner in the 32nd minute. That came just after Lautaro Martinez missed an excellent chance to give Inter the lead, sending the ball over the bar from close range as he stretched to meet a cross from Robin Gosens. After that, the closest Inter came to a goal was when Kristjan Asllani put the ball into the net from a clearly offside position at a free kick soon after the break.
With Bayern in full control of the game following Choupo-Moting's goal, Nagelsmann opted to give game time off the bench to two promising youngsters, 17-year-old striker Mathys Tel and 16-year-old midfielder Paul Wanner. Edin Dzeko had a shot saved by Bayern goalkeeper Sven Ulreich in stoppage time.
Barcelona 4, Viktoria Plzen 2
PLZEN, Czech Republic (AP) -- Barcelona closed its disappointing Champions League campaign with a win at Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday.
Barcelona had already been eliminated in advance, while Plzen knew it had finished last in Group C. Barcelona ended the group stage with seven points in third place, guaranteed of a spot in the Europa League playoffs.
Ferran Torres scored twice and Marcos Alonso and teenager Pablo Torre grabbed a goal each for the Catalan club. The hosts got on the board with a pair of goals by Tomas Chory.
Barcelona's only other group-stage victory had been 5-1 against Plzen in their opener. It then lost 2-0 at Bayern Munich and 1-0 at Inter Milan, which both advanced to the next round. Bayern beat Inter 2-0 at home on Tuesday for its six straight victory in the group.
A 3-3 draw at home against Inter then meant Barcelona needed the Italian team to stumble in its final matches, which didn't happen. Barcelona also lost 3-0 at home to Bayern.
It was the first time since 1999 that Barcelona failed to advance to the knockout stage in consecutive years, coinciding with the departure of Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain two seasons ago.
This season's failure to advance was a humbling setback after Barcelona went on a spending spree to boost its squad in the hope of recovering some of that money with a deep run in the European competition. But not even the addition of the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were enough in the Champions League.
Club Brugge 0, Bayer Leverkusen 0
LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) -- Club Brugge missed out on winning its Champions League group after being held to a 0-0 draw on Monday at Bayer Leverkusen.
Brugge had already secured a place in the last 16 as the first Belgian club to reach the knockout stage since Gent in 2015-16.
Combined with Porto's 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the other game in Group B, the draw with Leverkusen meant that Brugge missed out on becoming the first team from Belgium to win a Champions League group since Anderlecht 22 years ago. Leverkusen placed third and heads to the Europa League ahead of Atletico.
The game started at a slow pace before gradually gathering intensity. Brugge's Kamal Sowah forced a good save from goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky in the 39th minute before Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong hit the side netting in first-half stoppage time.
Both teams came close to taking the lead early in the second half, with Brugge's Canadian winger Tajon Buchanan blasting a shot against the crossbar in the opening seconds of the half. Former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet stopped Brugge from falling behind when he pushed a dangerous Patrik Schick header over the bar at a corner.
Ajax 3, Rangers 1
GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -- Rangers was left with an unwanted group-stage record in the Champions League after losing at home to Ajax on Tuesday, which secured a place in the Europa League's qualifying playoffs.
Rangers finished Group A with six straight losses and a goal difference of minus 20 _ the worst group stage record ever.
On another damaging European night for the Scottish team, Steven Berghuis put the Dutch champions ahead in the fourth minute before Mohammed Kudus added a second in the 29th.
Rangers captain James Tavernier scored a late penalty but substitute Francisco Conceicao soon restored the visitors' two-goal lead. The win sealed third place in the group for Ajax, whose two victories both came against Rangers.
The previous worst group-stage record was held by Dinamo Zagreb, which lost all six games and finished with a goal difference of minus 19 in 2011-12.
Rangers will be glad the punishment is over in its first Champions League campaign in 12 years.
It needed a win by five goals or more to drop into the Europa League but even the most fervent Rangers supporters dismissed that possibility.
Liverpool 2, Napoli 0
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) -- Not for the first time, the Champions League is proving a haven for Liverpool.
A 2-0 win against Napoli on Tuesday ended the Italians' unbeaten start to the season and served as a reminder of what Jurgen Klopp's team is still capable of.
After back-to-back losses in the Premier League against relegation-fighting Nottingham Forest and Leeds, Liverpool did what no other team has been capable of by inflicting defeat on Napoli.
Late goals from Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez decided a match that was short on entertainment or chances.
And it was a result that was of little consequence to the group standings, with both teams assured of qualification to the round of 16 before kick off and Napoli still progressing as Group A winners.
But that will be of no concern to Klopp, who is looking to boost the confidence of his players wherever he can, such has been Liverpool's inconsistency this term.
In that sense it will take more than one win to dispel the doubts surrounding his team. Especially coming in the Champions League _ a competition that has so often provided form-defying performances from a club that has won it on six occasions and reached the final in three of the last five seasons under Klopp.
