After two fascinating knockout stages, Euro 2020 is down to the final four.
In the first semifinal, Italy and Spain face off in a clash of two European powerhouses who battled in the final in 2012 – a one-sided match Spain won 4-0. In Wednesday’s semifinal, England looks to advance to their first-ever Euro final with a surprise Denmark side, playing for captain Christian Eriksen, standing in their way.
How do the last four teams stack up? We’ve ranked the semifinalists heading into the penultimate stage of the tournament.

1) Italy
Semifinal opponent: Spain
Quarterfinal result: 2-1 vs. Belgium
Pre-tournament FIFA ranking: No. 7
Odds to win Euro 2020: +215
While England remain the favourite to win Euro 2020 heading into the semifinals, Italy should still be considered the best team remaining in the tournament. The Azzurri rolled through most of the first half against a dangerous Belgian side in the quarterfinals and defended perfectly in the second half as Belgium brought pressure. Roberto Mancini’s squad is the semifinals’ most complete and anything less than a tournament victory at this point should be considered a disappointment.
2) England
Semifinal opponent: Denmark
Quarterfinal result: 4-0 vs. Ukraine
Pre-tournament FIFA ranking: No. 4
Odds to win Euro 2020: +150
Gareth Southgate’s team enters the semifinals flying high after a 4-0 drubbing of the Ukraine that never felt in doubt. Southgate’s lineup changes continue to be home runs, the Three Lions’ defence is the tournament’s best and Harry Kane finally looks like his prolific goal-scoring self. However, the Danes present a tough challenge for England, who lost 1-0 at Wembley when these teams last played back in October.
3) Spain
Semifinal opponent: Italy
Quarterfinal result: 1-1 vs. Switzerland (Advanced 3-1 on penalties)
Pre-tournament FIFA ranking: No. 6
Odds to win Euro 2020: +280
After barely surviving a depleted Swiss side in the quarterfinal, Spain faces what will undoubtedly be the toughest test of the tournament for Luis Enrique’s team against Italy in the semifinals. Expect La Roja to dominate possession against the Italians, something Spain has done all tournament long, but they’ll need to find a way to break down the opposition and find the back of the net, something they struggled to do in the quarterfinals.
4) Denmark
Semifinal opponent: England
Quarterfinal result: 2-1 vs. Czech Republic
Pre-tournament FIFA ranking: No. 10
Odds to win Euro 2020: +800
As we’ve said in previous rankings, Denmark’s run to the last four is the best story of this tournament. The Danes are a quality side galvanized by the traumatic collapse of captain Christian Eriksen on Matchday 1. If there’s one knock on Denmark, though, it’s that they’ve had a fairly easy road to get to this point – that ends in the semifinals against England, the only team in the tournament yet to allow a goal. But don’t count them out. As mentioned above, Kasper Hjulmand’s team has found success against the Three Lions recently and based on those results we expect the Danes to keep the semifinal tight.
