Mexico defender Luis “Chaka” Rodriguez has revealed that his wife and family received death threats on social media after the team’s 2-0 loss to the United States in Concacaf World Cup qualifying on Friday.
On Monday night, Rodriguez replied to the account – which went by the name Miguel – that targeted his family and asked him to stop sending the threats towards his family.
“Miguel, I’m the husband of the wife you wrote to,” Rodriguez responded in Spanish on Instagram. “I understand that my work in the national team can be the cause of all of this in you. I don’t justify it, but I understand it.
“I ask you, please do not to write any more to my wife, to rape and kill are very cruel words. Miguel, we don’t deserve this, including the family least of all. I hope this is over now. May God bless you.”
Mexico’s loss to the U.S. on Friday was their third defeat in the calendar year. It’s the first time the Mexicans have lost three times to the United States in the same year since 1937.
The defeat knocked Mexico out of the top spot. It is also just one point adrift of Canada entering their World Cup qualifier in Edmonton on Tuesday night.
