Wayne Rooney has agreed to terms to become D.C. United's next coach, according to Pablo Maurer of The Athletic.
Rooney, who played for D.C. from 2018 to 2020, was previously manager of Derby County in the Championship – the second tier of English football – but the club was mired in financial trouble, entered administration and suffered a heavy points deduction before it was relegated to the third division this season. Rooney officially stepped down as manager on June 24.
The former Manchester United great scored 25 goals in 52 games in all competitions for D.C. during his two seasons with the club.
Rooney, 36, is the record goal-scorer for both the England national team and Man United. He played more than 880 competitive games for club and country.
