On the brink of elimination, the Netherlands saved its boldest play for last — and it paid off.
Down 2-1 to Argentina in a quarterfinal match, and ten minutes into injury time, the Dutch drew a foul near the edge of the box, perfect territory for a direct free kick.
But instead of blasting a shot over the wall, midfielder Teun Koopmeiners rolled a soft pass beside it that land landed right to the feet of Wout Weghorst, who put it past Argentine 'keeper Emiliano Martinez.
It was Weghorst's second goal after coming on as a substitute in the 78th minute as the Netherlands pulled off the unimaginable: erase a two-goal Argentina lead to force extra time.
Unfortunately for the Dutch, the miraculous effort wasn't enough to carry them home.
After a scoreless extra time, Argentina edge the Netherlands in a penalty shootout, 4-3, to advance to a semifinal matchup against Croatia.
