MADRID, Spain — Spanish champion Atletico Madrid has bought Slovenia goalkeeper Jan Oblak from Benfica with Thibaut Courtois’ future likely at Chelsea.
Atletico announced the transfer, depending on the standard medical, on Wednesday with the 21-year-old Oblak agreeing to a six-year deal.
The 1.86-meter (6-foot-1) Oblak has similar features to Courtois, who helped Atletico win four trophies in three full seasons on loan from Chelsea, including Atletico’s first league trophy in 18 years. Atletico also reached the Champions League final in May where it lost to Real Madrid in extra-time.
Oblak’s arrival is one of the few summer signings by Atletico, which has also sold striker Diego Costa and defender Filipe Luis to Chelsea.
Oblak helped to guide Benfica to the Portuguese title last season.
