BORDEAUX, France — Gus Poyet has been hired as coach of French league club Bordeaux.
Bordeaux made the announcement on Saturday after defeating Nantes 1-0 in the league under interim coach Eric Bedouet, who was put in temporary charge on Thursday following Jocelyn Gourvennec’s departure.
Poyet, a 50-year-old Uruguayan, has signed a one-year deal. Financial terms of the contract were not revealed.
A former Chelsea and Tottenham player, Poyet has previously coached clubs including Brighton, Sunderland and more recently Shanghai Shenhua.
Gourvennec was fired following a string of poor results and a home loss to Caen that left Bordeaux just two points above the relegation zone. Gourvennec led Bordeaux to a sixth-placed finish last season.
