MONCTON, N.B. — Lady Andrade and Catalina Usme scored goals as Colombia stunned third-ranked France 2-0 at Moncton Stadium on Saturday in one of the biggest upsets in Women’s World Cup history.
The underdog Colombians opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Andrade broke free from a pair of defenders for a tap-in goal. Usme clinched her country’s first World Cup win with a goal on the counterattack in the 93rd minute.
The French lost despite outshooting Colombia 21-3.
France was unlucky as well. Colombian defender Daniela Montoya appeared to touch the ball with her hand inside the penalty area in the 67th minute, but a foul wasn’t called.
In other Group F action, Fran Kirby scored one of two second half goals as England edged Mexico 2-1.
Karen Carney added the other for the English, who moved into a tie with France for second in the group.
Kirby, 21, gave England its first goal of the World Cup with a toe poke past Cecilia Santiago in the 71st minute. Carney’s goal came in the 82nd minute off a header.
Fabiola Ibarra scored in stoppage time for Mexico.
The English face group leaders Columbia on Wednesday while last place Mexico play the French.
Andressa Alves scored in the 44th minute as Brazil shutout Spain 1-0 in Group E action in Montreal.
The win secures Brazil a spot in the knockout stage and is also its eighth straight in group stage play. Brazil is unbeaten in 14 group matches since a loss to Germany in 1995.
Spain was in control for much of the first half, but Alves scored on a second effort after her first shot was cleared near the goal line.
Brazilian goalkeeper Luciana was able to deflect a shot from Spain’s Irene Paredes in stoppage time to secure the win.
Costa Rica escaped with a 2-2 draw against South Korea is the other Group E match.
Karla Villalobos came off the bench to score in the 89th minute and tie the game while Melissa Herrera had the other for Costa Rica.
So-Yun Ji tied the game at one in the 21st minute off a penalty kick for the South Koreans. They extended their lead in the 25th after a successful header by Gaeul Jeon.
Last place South Korea finishes up group play Wednesday against Spain with Brazil playing Costa Rica.
