England Roundup: Spurs remain unbeaten; Man U rallies to beat Forest

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — James Maddison scored his first goal for Tottenham in a 2-0 win over Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday that maintained Spurs’ unbeaten start under Ange Postecoglou.

Maddison put Spurs ahead in the 17th minute with a precise finish and Dejan Kulusevski doubled the advantage with his first goal of the season in the 63rd as Tottenham followed up last weekend’s home win over Manchester United with another impressive performance.

The team now has two wins and a draw under Postecoglou while playing the attack-minded style of football that the manager has brought to the club. Though with Richarlison struggling badly up front for a third game in a row and still looking for a first goal of the season — he was taken off an hour into the game — some Spurs fans might still be wondering just how good this team could have been had the club not sold talismanic striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich on the eve of the season.

Tottenham dominated the first half and Maddison — who joined from relegated Leicester in the off-season — opened the scoring when he ran onto a pass into the area from Pepe Matar Sarr and directed the ball inside the far post with a first-time effort.

Richarlison had a chance to double the lead when he was played through on goal, but after evading one defender, he couldn’t get his feet sorted in time for a shot before the ball was blocked by another.

Bournemouth improved after the break but Tottenham doubled its lead against the run of play when Destiny Udogie exchanged passes with Son Heung-min before pulling the ball back across goal, where Kulusevski slotted it inside the far post.

Heavy rain then further reduced Bournemouth’s chances of staging a comeback.

The Cherries have one point from its opening three games after losing at Liverpool last weekend.

Fulham 2, Arsenal 2

In London, Joao Palhinha scored in the 87th minute to give 10-man Fulham a 2-2 draw at Arsenal.

Arsenal gifted Fulham the lead after just 57 seconds after a defensive howler but came back to lead 2-1 thanks to second-half goals from Bukayo Saka and Eddie Nketiah. But the hosts couldn’t see out the win as Palhinha was left unmarked to slot home a corner for the late equalizer. That was despite Fulham going a man down when Calvin Bassey was shown a second yellow card in the 83rd.

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus came on for his first appearance of the season after a knee injury but the Gunners couldn’t find a winner through nine minutes of injury time. It was Arsenal’s first dropped points of the campaign after opening with two wins, and the setback was largely self-inflicted.

Fulham took an early lead when Saka misplayed a back pass, sending Andreas Pereira through on goal with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale stranded well outside his area. As Ramsdale backpedaled toward goal, Pereira calmly slotted the ball past him into the open net.

Arsenal missed a handful of decent chances to equalize in the first half, with Gabriel Martinelli drawing three saves from Bernd Leno alone. Kai Havertz had the best chance in the 11th minute when Saka met a cross at the far post and poked the ball across goal toward the German, who lunged in but only managed to poke it wide of the net.

Arsenal gifted Fulham another chance when Ben White let the ball drop to Raul Jimenez, who nearly scored with a spectacular overhead kick that sailed just wide of the post.

Jimenez returned to the Emirates for the first time since 2020 when a head collision while playing for Wolverhampton left him with a fractured skull that sidelined him for nearly a year.

Arsenal struggled to create quality chances in a second half played in the middle of a thunder storm that lit up the sky above Emirates Stadium, until substitute Fabio Vieira helped turn the game around. The Portuguese midfielder first earned a penalty when he was brought down in the area, and Saka calmly converted from the spot.

Nketiah then put Arsenal ahead minutes later by poking home a low cross from Vieira. Fulham complained that play went on despite Bassey staying down after a challenge on Saka in the area moments earlier and Fulham manager Marco Silva was booked for his protests.

Arsenal looked set to see out the win when Bassey was sent off, but more sloppy defending from a corner allowed Fulham to equalize.

Vieira nearly capped his impactful cameo by netting the winner deep into injury time, but Leno tipped his curling shot over the bar.

Manchester United 3, Notts Forest 2

In Manchester, the home side came from two goals down to beat Nottingham Forest 3-2, as Bruno Fernandes’ 76th-minute penalty completed a comeback after the visitors went down to 10 men.

United had its worst-ever start to a Premier League game as poor defending helped give Forest a 2-0 lead after less than four minutes. Taiwo Awoniyi put Forest ahead on a counterattack after just 86 seconds, with Willy Boly quickly doubling the lead from a free kick.

It was the first time United trailed by two goals four minutes into a Premier League match, but Christian Eriksen pulled one back by converting a cross from Marcus Rashford in the 17th.

Casemiro wasted a great chance to level but made amends shortly after halftime when the midfielder slotted home at the end of a clever free kick routine.

Joe Worrall was shown a straight red card for denying Fernandes a goalscoring opportunity in the 67th, and the United captain then scored the winner from the spot after Danilo was adjudged to have brought down Rashford.

It secured a second win in three games for United, after falling to a 2-0 loss at Tottenham last weekend.

“It wasn’t the perfect start for us but we kept control, kept the ball and started doing the right things,” Fernandes said. “They defended well with a lot of players and it was difficult to get through, but we got the result and that’s the most important thing.”

United duo Mason Mount and Luke Shaw both missed the game with injuries.

Brentford 1, Crystal Palace 1

In Brentford, Joachim Andersen’s equalizer secured Crystal Palace a 1-1 draw against unbeaten Brentford.

A first-half stunner from Kevin Schade gave the Bees an early lead at the Gtech Community Stadium before Andersen leveled in the 76th minute.

After a dominant 3-0 win away at Fulham last week, Thomas Frank’s Brentford failed to put the game to bed which allowed the Eagles to claim a point in west London.

After a quiet start from both sides, Palace burst into life through the creative Eberechi Eze. The midfielder, recently linked with a move to Manchester City, hustled to win back the ball before feeding Odsonne Edouard who was dispossessed before testing Mark Flekken.

But it was the Bees who struck first in the 18th minute.

Schade picked up the ball on the left hand side before driving at the Palace backline and producing a spectacular curled strike into Sam Johnstone’s top-left corner, recording his first goal for the club.

Not long after, it rained heavily and the greasy surface favored the elegant Mathias Jansen who sprayed the ball into attacking areas before a 38th-minute header from Yoane Wissa sailed over the bar.

Palace’s only hope was through the dangerous Eze who, after 54 minutes, slalomed his way through a wall of home defenders before being denied a penalty when he was brought down.

Flekken denied Jefferson Lerma’s header from close range before Brentford scrambled to block Jordan Ayew’s rebound.

Palace’s persistence was rewarded 14 minutes from time. Andersen played a one-two with Ayew before driving into the box where he beat Flekken to the ball with his sliding effort.

West Ham 3, Brighton 1

In Brighton, West Ham put on a counterattacking masterclass to end the home side’s perfect start to the English Premier League by beating the host 3-1 on Saturday.

Brighton had a majority of the possession but West Ham made the most of its counters as the visitor raced to 3-0 thanks to goals from James Ward-Prowse, Jarred Bowen and Michail Antonio.

Pascal Gross pulled one back in the 81st minute and had good chances for a second but West Ham held on for a second straight 3-1 victory after beating Chelsea at home last weekend. It turned the tables on a Brighton side that looked rampant in scoring four times in each of its first two games.

Ward-Prowse had two assists in that Chelsea game and added his first West Ham goal — and 50th in the league overall — from close range in the 19th against Brighton.

Wolverhampton 1, Everton 0

In Liverpool, Wolverhampton substitute Sasa Kalajdzic scored a late winner two minutes after coming on to secure a 1-0 victory at Everton in the English Premier League and leave the host still without a point or a goal.

Everton dominated large parts of the game and had 15 shots, but it was the visitors who scored with their only effort on target in the 87th minute.

Kalajdzic rose highest to glance in Pedro Neto’s hanging, inswinging cross and give Wolves their first points after two opening losses.

Everton still hasn’t scored in three straight defeats, though, and is off to its worst start to a season since 1990.

Everton manager changed his lineup to include youngsters Lewis Dobbin and Jarrad Branthwaite and the hosts looked more vibrant going forward than in the two previous weeks. But the team still lacks a cutting edge up front with Dominic Calvert-Lewin out injured.

Fabio Silva also turned home a cross from Neto in the 57th but Everton was spared by the offside flag that time.
