History is littered with examples of the democratic process failing.
This is not one of those times.
San Diego is in the process of trying to get an expansion MLS franchise (with an ownership group led by former U.S. national Landon Donovan), and is allowing fans to vote on the team’s name. The runaway leader is currently “Footy McFooty Face” in an obvious nod to a certain British sea vessel.
The team received thousands of nickname submissions, and narrowed them down to a list of 20, which also includes “Bad Hombres”, “Valor”, “Surf”, and “Sculpin” among other more typical soccer names.
The Facebook page where the vote is being held says it will submit the winning name to the MLS for approval, so the odds of San Diego Footy McFooty Face ever taking the pitch seem remote.
Having said that, it can’t hurt to try and make a difference. You can vote for yourself here.
