TURIN, Italy — Striker Amauri aims to repay Juventus for a poor season, and believes he’ll fit well into the formations of new coach Luigi Del Neri.
Juventus finished seventh last season and only scraped into the Europa League after Inter Milan won the Italian league and cup double.
Amauri scored just five goals in 27 appearances for the Turin club.
"I have a debt to pay the fans and the club," Amauri said Wednesday. "After a year like the one just gone you just want to start over and have a much improved season.
"The fans couldn’t have been happy with me last year and I feel the same. It has been a long time since I have had a season that bad."
Last year Ciro Ferrara started the season in charge, but was fired in January and replaced by Alberto Zaccheroni.
Amauri worked under Del Neri at Chievo Verona and is hoping to benefit from the coach’s commitment to attacking soccer.
"The thing I like about the coach is that he only picks players that are in form and it will be up to me to give him difficult decisions to make," Amauri said. "His system of play is good for a striker and for a player like me that needs crosses it will be good."
Since joining Juventus in May, Del Neri has been quick to strengthen his squad in a bid to win its first title since 2003.
Defender Leonardo Bonucci, goalkeeper Marco Storari and midfielder Jorge Martinez have signed for the club, while wing Simone Pepe and fullback Marco Motta have agreed to one-year loan deals.
"Juventus never used to speak about the title, but always won it and I will do the same," Amauri said. "I will not talk about the championship and see if the rule stays the same.
"We have players who can do great things. Let’s get on with the season and then we will see what happens."
