LEVERKUSEN, Germany — Bayer Leverkusen says it has signed Bosnia-Herzegovina captain and central defender Emir Spahic on a two-year contract.

The 32-year-old Spahic was under contract with Sevilla but had been loaned out to Anzhi Makhachkala.

No details of the transfer deal were released.

Leverkusen managing director Wolfgang Holzhaeuser said Spahic was an "optimal solution" to bolster the club’s defence.

Leverkusen finished third in the Bundesliga last season and qualified for the Champions League.
