Liverpool have signed forward Cody Gakpo from Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven for a reported fee of £37 million ($44 million USD) plus add-ons according to Sky Sports’ Fabrizio Romano.
The transfer window has not formally begun as of yet, however, the deal has been finalized, according to Romano, and Gakpo will join the club as soon as the window reopens on Jan. 1. The add-ons can total up to £13 million in additional fees.
Gakpo made his name at the World Cup. The 23-year-old scored three goals in five games for the Netherlands and was a standout from the left wing at the tournament. So far this season in the Eredivisie, he leads the league in scoring, finding the back of the net nine times and has assisted on 12 more.
Liverpool have been rife with injuries so far this campaign, effectively derailing their hopes to contend with league leaders Arsenal and reigning champs Manchester City. Forwards Luis Diaz (knee) and Diogo Jota (calf) have been out for most of the year and more recently, Roberto Firmino missed their clash against Manchester City on Thursday.
There were formerly reports linking Gakpo to rivals Manchester United for this upcoming transfer window as well as Leeds United over the summer, however, the Reds secured his services first.
The £37 million fee for the Dutch standout will reportedly be a record signing fee for PSV Eindhoven when taking into account the potential £13 million in add-ons.
