Tried as they might, Canada’s semifinal rematch against Argentina was just too tall of a task for the Canadians in their debut Copa America appearance.
Despite that, it was a run that the country wasn’t expecting, but won’t soon forget. Not considered a favourite whatsoever heading into the tournament, the Canadians finished the group stage in second place — topping Peru in penalties and holding Chile to a draw — to advance to the knockout stage, where they took down Venezuela in penalties in the quarterfinal.
It’s not over for Les Rouges just yet, as they will face the loser of the semifinal between Colombia and Uruguay to battle for third place on Saturday, but Canadians and the sports world alike took to social media to express pride in how the underdogs fared throughout the tournament.
