Copa redux: Ramos hang on to new trophy

MADRID, Spain — Real Madrid proudly showed off its first Copa del Rey trophy for 18 years on Wednesday and, this time, Sergio Ramos held on to it.

Madrid beat biggest rival Barcelona in last month’s final and Ramos gained extra notoriety after dropping the domestic cup from the top of the open bus during celebrations. The bus ran over the cup, and luckily a replacement was available.

Ramos joked on Wednesday he had a firm hold on the cup as players, coaches and club staff celebrated the victory in the centre of the Spanish capital.

President Florentino Perez says the title "was an obsession — but now we can dream of more successes."

Coach Jose Mourinho broke a self-imposed silence to tell the gathered fans "thank you very much."
