BERLIN — Leipzig joined German second-division champion Freiburg in the Bundesliga next season, clinching promotion Sunday with a 2-0 win at home over Karlsruher SC.

Emil Forsberg and Marcel Halstenberg scored in the second half for Leipzig to reach 67 points, five more than third-place Nuremberg with one round of games remaining.

Nuremberg, which defeated visiting St. Pauli 1-0, is assured of the relega-tion/promotion playoff against the team that finishes third from bottom in the Bun-desliga.

Freiburg, which clinched promotion last week, secured the second-division title with a 1-0 win at home over Heidenheim thanks to substitute Florian Niederlechner’s 87th-minute volley.

It’s the first promotion for Leipzig, which was founded on May 19, 2009.
