Sheffield’s Billy Sharp calls out Wrexham: ‘I’m glad we’ve beaten them’

Sheffield United captain Billy Sharp had choice words for Wrexham AFC following his team’s 3-1 win in their FA Cup fourth replay.

Despite the fifth-division Welsh club being the underdog, the striker was displeased with Wrexham’s complacency. Had the team owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney won, they were set for a home match against Premier League side Tottenham Hotspurs in the fifth round.

“They played excellent, but I think that they were disrespectful though,” Sharp said after the match. “Just a few things before the game, thinking they were already through.

“I’m glad we’ve beaten them.”

Wrexham tied the match 1-1 with a Paul Mullin penalty in the 59th minute. Mullin missed a second penalty but Sheffield made their way back when Sharp scored the go-ahead goal four minutes into stoppage time. Sander Berge added a third goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time and Sheffield took a 3-1 victory.

Sharp added that both Wrexham and Sheffield are doing well in their respective leagues and wished them good luck on securing promotion to the Football League. Sheffield is currently 10 points clear in second place of the English second division while Wrexham stands second, three point short of first place in the English fifth tier.

However, the Sheffield native thought that his club deserved more respect from the 2022-23 FA Cup fairytale team.

“I wasn’t happy with what the way that they’ve been, as a club, before the game,” Sharp said. “Eyeing up Spurs, they haven’t even beaten us. We’re an honest set of lads and we want to go as far as we can in this competition.

“They thought we would just roll over when they got back in it and I think the referee was helping them on that as well. I don’t think they gave me one foul tonight, that’s one of the things that made us mad tonight but I’ve got a smile on my face because we’re through to the next round.”
