SAN SEBASTIAN, Spain — Real Sociedad has hired former Barcelona player Eusebio Sacristan to replace David Moyes as the Spanish club’s manager.

Moyes, the former Everton and Manchester United manager, was let go on Monday exactly one year after he had taken charge of the Basque Country team.

Sociedad has won just two of 11 games this season and is in 16th place, level on points with the 18th-place team in the relegation zone.

Sacristan won the 1992 European Cup and four Spanish league titles playing for Barcelona under Johan Cruyff.

He was a Barcelona assistant under Frank Rijkaard until taking over Celta Vigo in the second division from 2009-2010. He then coached Barcelona’s reserve side.

Sacristan says “we have to work and raise the level of effort and commitment to change the dynamic.”
