BREMEN, Germany — Werder Bremen says it has signed United States striker Aron Johannsson from the Dutch club AZ Alkmaar.
The Bundesliga club says Johannsson signed a four-year contract.
Werder’s managing director, Thomas Eichlin, says Johannsson was the "absolutely preferred candidate" to fill the gap left by the departure of striker Franco di Santo for Schalke.
The 24-year-old Johannsson has Icelandic roots, and joined AZ two years ago from Aarhus in Denmark.
As a junior, he played for Iceland before deciding to represent the U.S., for which he has four goals in 17 senior appearances.
