Canada’s Bianca Andreescu advanced to the Round of 16 at the Bad Homburg Open on Monday with a 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Great Britain’s Sonay Kartal.
Fifth-seeded Andreescu battled in her first-round match in Homburg, Germany, being pushed to three sets.
Andreescu will next face Spain's Rebeka Masarova, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus.
The Bad Homburg Open serves as a tune-up for next week’s Grand Slam event at Wimbledon, where Andreescu, the top-ranked Canadian female, attempts to claim her first title at the the All England Club, and her first major since her U.S. Open victory in 2019.
Andreescu’s previous best result at Wimbledon is a second-round exit in 2022. She will enter the tournament as one of the top 50 seeds.
