Andreescu returns from injury, Marino advances, Bouchard earns qualifying spot in Madrid

The 2023 Madrid Open will feature two comeback appearances by Canadian tennis stars.

Bianca Andreescu is in the main draw of the Masters 1000 event and is expected to compete less than one month after she tore two ligaments in her left ankle at the Miami Open — an injury she called "the worst pain I've ever felt."

While she hasn't commented on her quick recovery yet, Andreescu is seeded No. 23 and has earned a first-round bye in Madrid. She will face either Wang Xiyu or Varvara Gracheva in the second round.

Meanwhile, Eugenie Bouchard earned a qualifying spot in the Madrid field after defeating Elizabeth Mandlik 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday. The former Wimbledon finalist is currently ranked No. 285 as she's slowly worked her way back from shoulder surgery in 2021.

Rebecca Marino defeated China's Zhu Lin 7-6 (1), 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Madrid Open on Tuesday.

Marino fired 11 aces to just two double faults in the win.

The Vancouver native also broke on three of her eight opportunities and won 73.1 per cent of first-serve points.

Zhu went without an ace and committed five double faults. She also went just 2-of-7 on break-point chances and won 62.3 per cent of first-serve points.
