Canada's Bianca Andreescu was forced to retire from her fourth-round match at the Miami Open on Monday night after suffering an apparent leg injury.
Facing off against No. 18 seed Ekaterina Alexandrovaat, the 22-year-old collapsed as she attempted to run down the ball during the third game of the second set.
Andreescu could immediately be heard crying and even exclaiming at one point, "I've never felt this kind of pain before." She received medical attention for several minutes before being taken off the court in a wheelchair.
Andreescu said in a tweet on Tuesday that she has a brace on her foot and is hoping that she avoided a serious injury. She added she is awaiting official results from tests.
"I'm just really sorry that it happened to [Andreescu]," Alexandrova said after the match. "Seeing her on the court in so much pain, it's just painful to watch.
"You cannot help, you just can do nothing, which is terrible. And I think she's going to be fine soon, and I'm wishing for her speedy recovery."
Andreescu, a Mississauga, Ont. native, has dealt with various injuries and setbacks throughout her career, including a torn meniscus in her left knee just months after she won the 2019 US Open.
Her exit at the Miami Open marks the third time she has been forced to retire at the tournament. In 2019 she retired due to a shoulder injury in the fourth round, and in 2021 she retired from the final with an ankle injury.
She took six months off to recover from injuries returning at the Stuttgart Open in April 2022.
The 22-year-old is ranked 31st in the world and is now working with Christophe Lambert who took over for Sven Groeneveld as her coach.
Alexandrova now advances on to the tournament's quarterfinals after a final score of 7-6 (0), 0-2 ret.
