Canada’s Andreescu cruises past Navarro in second round of the French Open

Bianca Andreescu of Canada registered a comfortable straight-sets win over Emma Navarro of the United States in the second round of the French Open. The 22-year-old from Mississauga, Ont. won 6-1, 6-4 and is set for her first third-round appearance at the French Open.

Fresh off her win against Victoria Azarenka on Tuesday, Andreescu looked fearless right from the beginning of the match. She raced off to a quick start by breaking Navarro twice. She served well to lead 4-0 in under fifteen minutes.

Moving well on the baseline, Andreescu barely missed the ball. She gave no chances to Navarro and comfortably won the first set in 27 minutes. The 42nd-ranked Canadian did not face a single break point and broke Navarro’s serve thrice in the set.

Andreescu held her serve to start the second set. She extended her lead to 2-1 after successive comfortable holds. But Navarro regrouped to emerge stronger in the second set. She drew first blood by breaking Andreescu to lead 3-2. She consolidated her break with a comfortable hold in the next game.

However, her lead did not last long. Andreescu got back into the rhythm to break Navarro and level the match 4-4. After that, Andreescu broke no sweat and won the next two games, to win the second set 6-4.

The 2019 US Open champion continues to carry Canadian hopes in women’s singles after Leylah Fernandez lost a close match on Wednesday. She is set to face Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine in round three.

A possible round 4 clash with number one seed Iga Swiatek is in the cards if both players manage to win their third-round matches. She joins Denis Shapovalov on the men’s side who is set to face number one seed Carlos Alcaraz in the third round on Friday.

In women’s doubles, Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski has partnered with Luisa Stefani of Brazil. They are seeded eighth and will play Dalma Galfi and Katarzyna Piter in the second round on Friday.

Leylah Fernandez will continue her French Open campaign in doubles with Taylor Towsend of the United States. They are seeded tenth and will face Ingrid Neel and Fang-Hsein Wu in the second round on Friday.
