Bouchard reaches 2nd round at Bell Challenge

QUEBEC — Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard defeated Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (0) on Wednesday to move into the second round at the Bell Challenge Cup.

Next up for the Montreal native, who is seeded fifth at the tournament and ranked 53rd in the world, is No. 150 Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan.

Elsewhere, three other players advanced to the quarter-finals with second-round victories. No. 6 Marina Erakovic of New Zealand defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycov of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-1, Christina McHale of the United States upset eighth seed Caroline Garcia of France 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-3, and Slovenia’s Polona Hercog made quick work of France’s Julie Coin with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Meanwhile in first-round play, Croatia’s Petra Martic downed the Czech Republic’s Lucie Hradecka 6-4, 7-6 (1), while Andrea Hlavackova, also of the Czech Republic, outlasted Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1.

In doubles, Carol Zhao of Richmond Hill, Ont., and Montreal’s Francoise Abanda defeated Latvia’s Liga Dekmeijere and Natalie Pluskota of the U.S. 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 to advance to the quarter-finals.
