The Bay Golf Club stayed undefeated and moved back to the top of the TGL standings with another win on Tuesday.
The Bay (Min Woo Lee, Shane Lowry, Wyndham Clark) defeated Jupiter Links GC (Max Homa, Kevin Kisner, Tom Kim) 6-3 to improve to 4-0-0 for the season.
“Obviously the first thing you want to do is come in here and get off to a good start, get into the playoffs and give yourself a chance to win this thing,” said Lowry. “But we came here tonight, and we really wanted to win and keep our winning streak going.
“You want to finish as high up as you can to get the best seed possible. I thought we did a great job tonight.”
Lee got The Bay on the board first, after converting a five-footer for birdie on the par-3 3rd, following a tremendous tee shot from Clark. Despite a full-blown shank from Kisner on No. 5, Homa clipped a perfect pitch from 45 yards away to just four feet to help Jupiter Links get a point and tie the match 1-1.
On the next hole, Lee chipped in from 24 feet away, becoming the first golfer in TGL history to drain two chips in one season. He very nearly did it again on No. 8, with his pitch from just off the green on the par 4 lipping out.
The Bay then maximized their hammer strategy on No. 9, earning three points by winning the hole with an eagle and pushing its lead to 5-1 after nine.
That was one of two eagles for The Bay Tuesday, a first in TGL history.
Kim and Kisner added points for Jupiter Links in singles, but it was too little, too late to mount a comeback.
Clark added a final birdie on the par-5 15th closer to push the final score to 6-3 for The Bay, which has now won 22 holes so far this season, one back of Los Angeles Golf Club for the most in TGL.
The Bay does, however, have eight points to top the table – one more than LAGC.
The Bay, LAGC, and Atlanta Drive GC have locked up playoff spots already.
The remaining playoff berth will go to one of New York Golf Club, Boston Common Golf, or Jupiter Links, who has two points on the season.
It all comes down to next week – the finale of the regular season.
“If it’s must-win, you’ve got to win,” Homa said about Jupiter Links’ match next week against Atlanta Drive GC. “It was fun to at least come out here and see that we could hole some putts and make some birdies and do some good things out there.
“It sucks to take an L, but at the same time, at least on my end, I know these guys all have a win under their belt. We do get another shot at it next week with some golf momentum.”
KEY MOMENT
With the match tight on the final hole of Triples, Jupiter Links threw the hammer prior to Min Woo Lee hitting his approach shot into the par 5. Lee would step up and roast a fairway wood from 258 yards away to just six feet to set up an eagle.
The Bay then threw its own hammer to make the hole worth three points.
Kevin Kisner gave it a valiant effort to try to chip in for eagle but couldn’t convert. Shane Lowry then stepped up and rolled in the putt – pushing The Bay ahead for good.
TOP PERFORMER
Min Woo Lee was an electric factory all night. One of Lee’s drives touched north of 192 miles per hour of ball speed – the highest such recorded speed in TGL. He also chipped in once and nearly did it again. Not only did Lee have the game Tuesday night, he also wasn’t shy to try to fire up the crowd.
Let him cook, indeed.
QUOTEABLE
“Right where you wanted it! I gave you the whole green,” Kevin Kisner to Max Homa after his shank on the fifth hole.
