The UFC Fight Night card in Edmonton will have a lot less firepower than expected as the promotion announced the cancellation of Derrick Lewis vs. Jhonata Diniz's main card bout, on Friday.
According to the UFC, Lewis had a non-weight cut related medical issue and that is why the heavyweight fight was cancelled less than 24 hours before the event at Rogers Place.
Lewis, a former title challenger and current 11th-ranked heavyweight was hoping to win his second consecutive fight, this time by putting an end to what's been a promising early UFC career for Diniz.
The Brazilian prospect is currently undefeated (8-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) but Lewis was going to be the biggest name on his resume had he ended up victorious on Saturday.
Instead, he'll have to wait for that opportunity for another day and watch the Edmonton card with the rest of the UFC fanbase.
Meanwhile, with the Lewis-Diniz bout no longer on the main card, Canadian Jasmine Jasudavicius gets bumped up from the prelims. She'll be taking on the 13th-ranked women's flyweight Ariane Da Silva and could move up a spot on the leaderboard with a win.
The St. Catherines, Ont. native is on a two-fight win streak, starting back at UFC 297 in Toronto. Jasudavicius is 11-3 in MMA (5-2 UFC).
Da Silva, "The Queen of Violence," is looking to get back in the win column after seeing her three-fight win streak end in April courtesy of a decision loss to Karine Silva.
UFC Edmonton action gets going at 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT with Sportsnet's coverage beginning at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT.
