It might take some time before we see Dustin Poirier enter the octagon again.
Following his lightweight title fight with Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 on Saturday, Poirier posted on X that he is currently nursing a broken nose, a broken rib and a partially torn ACL. USA Today's MMA Junkie later confirmed Poirier is under medical suspension.
According to the report, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) handed out the medical suspensions on Tuesday. Poirier won't be able to return to the octagon until his nose is cleared by an ENT specialist and his knee is cleared by an orthopedist.
After the fight, in his in-ring interview with Joe Rogan, Poirier also alluded to potentially retiring from the sport and said that he would take some time to look in the mirror and reflect on what's next.
"I mean I know I can compete with the best of these guys. It's just like if I do fight again, what am I fighting for? Just to fight? I've done that 50 times," Poirier said in his post-fight interview. "I don't know, I got a beautiful girl I love and I gotta see. I think this could be it honestly."
USA Today also reported indefinite suspensions handed out to 10 total fighters after the marquee event. Co-main event fighters Sean Strickland (tibia/leg) and Paulo Costa (right ankle/foot) are both set to take indefinite time away from the sport while making recoveries.
