A middleweight matchup between ranked contenders is set to headline the UFC’s upcoming Aug. 24 Fight Night event at the UFC Apex.
No. 5-ranked Jared Cannonier is scheduled to face No. 12-ranked Caio Borralho in a five-round bout contested at 185 pounds, the UFC announced Tuesday.
Cannonier had a two-fight win streak snapped in controversial fashion in June when he lost by technical knockout to Nassourdine Imavov in the fourth round of a main event that the majority of the MMA world felt was stopped prematurely.
The 40-year-old was coming off back-to-back wins over Sean Strickland and Marvin Vettori and described the loss to Imavov as “gut-wrenching” with it halting his momentum at a late stage of his career. Cannonier’s only losses at 185 pounds prior to the controversial stoppage were to former champions Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker.
Borralho, 31, is riding high off a knockout of Paul Craig in May and he will be looking to improve to 7-0 in the UFC. The Brazilian is one of the top rising contenders in the division and Cannonier should represent his toughest test to date.
