Action returned to the UFC Apex Saturday with a matchup between top-10 welterweight contenders atop a 12-fight card.
One-time title challenger Gilbert Burns and rising contender Sean Brady took the spotlight in the main event.
Official UFC Fight Night: Burns vs. Brady results below:
MAIN CARD
Sean Brady def. Gilbert Burns via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 49-46)
It would figure that two jiu-jitsu black belts would spend most of their 25-minute main event trading strikes but that’s what the powerful 170-pounders ended up doing. Brady was the busier fighter, pressuring the more experienced Burns and setting a new personal record for strikes landed in the fight and mixing in seven takedowns. Burns responded to a body kick by wobbling Brady with a right hand at one point. The pair traded low blows at the start of the fourth round and ended it with a beautiful grappling exchange – the duality of cage fighting on display. Brady improved to 17-1. His only pro loss to date was to current welterweight champion Belal Muhammad.
Natalia Silva def. Jessica Andrade via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Silva’s speed advantage was apparent early, both footwork and hand speed as Andrade, a former champ, pressed forward throwing heavy hooks. Silva stung Andrade with a left hand in the second that had her grabbing at her eye momentarily. The disparity in striking became more apparent as the fight progressed. The numbers increased and she swept the scorecards. Also a classy, emotional post-fight interview from the 27-year-old Brazilian whose sister died only four months ago.
Steve Garcia def. Kyle Nelson via technical knockout at 3:59 of Round 1
Make it five consecutive knockout wins for Garcia, all within the first two rounds. He stumbled early and Nelson had back control until Garcia exploded out of it and began raining down elbows and punches, eventually finding a home for a hard left elbow that caused Nelson to cover up.
Cody Durden def. Matt Schnell via submission (ninja choke) at 0:29 of Round 2
These two flyweights, who fought at bantamweight Saturday after Durden stepped in as a late replacement, always deliver and that held true on Saturday. They traded hands for five furious minute to start the bout then Durden took advantage of an early second-round takedown attempt, locking in a tight ninja choke.
Yanal Ashmouz def. Trevor Peek via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
This was a brawler vs. technician type matchup and the technician won. Peek bit down on his mouthpiece and headhunted, while Ashmouz was careful with his distance management and looked to time takedowns and clinches when Peek would overcommit on power punches. Ashmouz’s wrestling was ultimately the difference, and he ended the fight a forceful takedown.
PRELIMINARY CARD
Chris Padilla def. Rong Zhu via technical knockout at 4:14 of Round 2
Despite Zhu being only 24 years old, this was his 31st pro bout and it marked the beginning of his second UFC stint. Zhu and Padilla engaged in a striking match heavy on leg kicks and tested the other’s chin frequently. Both proved durable, however Padilla hurt Zhu with a crisp standing counter elbow that Zhu actually thought was an eye poke. Zhu’s left eye immediately began swelling shut and moments later the bout was stopped after a brief examination from the cageside physician.
Isaac Dulgarian def. Brendon Marotte via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 4:19 of Round 2
Dulgarian wasted no time and immediately shot a takedown on Marotte. The action was on the canvas within 10 seconds and Dulgarian controlled all but six seconds of the opening five minutes in top position. Marotte threw a running knee to begin the second but that resulted in Dulgarian ending right back on top. He patiently worked into a position where to lock in an arm-triangle finish. He improved to 7-1 as a pro and maintained his 100 per cent finishing rate.
André Lima def. Felipe dos Santos via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
These are two of the more impressive young flyweights on the UFC roster with dos Santos, 23, and Lima, 25, both showing their high ceilings on the prelims. Lima’s striking defence was sharper in the first round as both traded punches and elbows before slowing the pace and dominating dos Santos with grappling in the second. Lima went back to that well in the final round, controlling the action on the mat and improving to 10-0 as a pro and 3-0 in the UFC in 2024 after getting his hand raised following two close rear-naked choke attempts in the third.
Gabriel Santos def. Yi Zha via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-26, 30-27)
These featherweights were focussed from the get-go and the opening round was competitive until Santos dropped Zha with a beautiful front kick that split his opponent’s guard. Santos frequently switched his stance to keep Zha guessing and landed a second front kick to the face early in the second. Santos was the more accurate and damaging striker throughout and showed off his well-rounded skills in the third by controlling much of the action on the ground.
Easily the leader in the clubhouse for Fight of the Night so far despite the one-sided scorecard.
Jaqueline Amorim def. Vanessa Demopoulos via submission (armbar) at 3:28 of Round 1
Brazil’s Amorim picked up her third consecutive win and finish thanks to an early armbar of Demopoulos who protested that Amorim grabbed inside her glove before locking in the hold and forcing a tap. Demopoulos had won five of six prior to Saturday's loss.
Andre Petroski def. Dylan Budka via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Petroski accumulated more than nine minute of control time over the course of his 15-minute catchweight bout with Budka who missed weight by 2.5 pounds one day prior
Nathan Fletcher def. Zygimantas Ramaska via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 1:14 of Round 2
These TUF 32 featherweights earned a shot in the UFC after admirable appearances on the reality show earlier this year and it was the English grappler who was able to implement his will on the Lithuanian striker. Ramaska had a nifty inverse triangle attempt in the opening round but could not prevent Fletcher from getting takedown and by the time the second round came around Ramaska no long had the energy to explode back to his feet and succumbed to a submission.
