The UFC returned to Edmonton for the first time since 2019 with a pair of flyweight contender bouts headlining a 13-fight card that also included some of the top Canadian talent in mixed martial arts.
Former men’s 125-pound champion Brandon Moreno met the returning Amir Albazi in the main event, and former two-time women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas looked to continue her strong run at flyweight against Erin Blanchfield in a five-round co-main event.
Below are the official results from UFC Edmonton.
MAIN CARD
Brandon Moreno def. Amir Albazi by unanimous decision (50-45, 49-46, 49-46)
It had been 17 months since Albazi last competed and he was coming off multiple surgeries. It showed early with Moreno the crisper fighter early in this five-round matchup. Moreno worked his striking at a comfortable distance, defended takedowns and buckled Albazi knees multiple times en route to a decisive victory.
Erin Blanchfield def. Rose Namajunas by unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-47)
The former two-time strawweight champion had won two in a row but was the underdog to Blanchfield on Saturday and after 25 closely contested minutes the younger fighter ended up picking up a huge victory. The fourth round was the tightest to score but all three judges had it three rounds to two for Blanchfield after five rounds.
Brendson Ribeiro def. Caio Machado by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
These light heavyweights spent the entire 15 minutes on the feet with the action picking up as the fight progressed. It was the first time Ribeiro got his hand raised after going the distance.
Jasmine Jasudavicius def. Ariane Da Silva by submission (D’arce choke) at 2:28 of Round 3
Jasudavicius extended her winning streak to three with another dominant showing, using her strong top game to control the fight and just like she did at UFC 297 against Priscilla Cachoeira, she didn’t risk waiting to see what the judges thought and locked in nice submission hold to force the tap from Da Silva.
Dustin Stoltzfus def. Marc-André Barriault by knockout at 4:28 of Round 1
Stoltzfus controlled Barriault on the canvas for the first few minutes of this middleweight bout. Once Barriault escaped and got back to his feet the two began brawling and Stoltzfus caught the Canadian with a combination he finished with a short right hand that turned out the lights.
Mike Malott def. Trevin Giles by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
The main card opened with a tactical welterweight contest that saw Ontario’s Malott get back on the winning track after suffering his first UFC loss at UFC 297 in Toronto earlier this year.
PRELIMINARY CARD
Aiemann Zahabi def. Pedro Munhoz by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
That's five straight wins for Zahabi who picked up the biggest win of his UFC career by topping the perennial-ranked Munhoz. Make that 2-0 on the night for Sportsnet analysts with Malott and Zahabi both earning hard-fought decision wins.
Charles Jourdain def. Victor Henry by submission (guillotine choke) at 3:43 of Round 2
Jourdain’s bantamweight debut went as planned as the Canadian forced a quick tap once he locked in his favourite submission hold.
Youssef Zalal def. Jack Shore by submission (arm-triangle choke) at 0:59 of Round 2
Make that three tapouts in 2024 for Zalal. That’s six wins in a row overall for the 28-year-old from Morocco who went the distance with current featherweight champion Ilian Topuria back in 2020.
Alexander Romanov def. Rodrigo Nascimento by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Romanov got back in the win column by sweeping the scorecards. Just the third decision win of his pro career.
Serhiy Sidey def. Garrett Armfield by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Sidey was on the wrong end of a split decision in Toronto in January but had his hand raised after a close contest with Armfield.
Cody Gibson def. Chad Anheliger by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)
California’s Gibon was able to maintain dominant positions for the majority of this bantamweight clash with Canadian Anheliger who has now lost three of his past four.
Jamey-Lyn Horth def. Ivana Petrovic by split decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)
The Canadian, Horth, was unable to finish several submission attempts throughout her UFC debut but her pressure was enough to eke out a close decision.
